Instead of bogging down my main page I decided to add a page for unique opportunities that come up. Whether they are language programs, study abroad, adoptee anthologies, documentaries-I figured you’d all like to stay informed.

March 27, 2008
If you’re in the Seattle area any time soon, here’s an interesting talk by adoptee Dr. John Palmer called “Karate Chops, Geishas, Nerds, and the Asian Invasion: Reflections of a Korean Adopted American.”
When: Thursday, April 17th
Time: 7-9pm.
Where: The Bush School
3400 E. Harrison Street
Seattle, WA 98112
206 322-7978
Directions: http://www.bush.edu/directions/
JOHN PALMER
Karate Chops, Geishas, Nerds, and the Asian Invasion:
Reflections of a Korean Adopted American
Many Americans believe that Asian Americans are the “model
minority” and thus do not suffer from racial
discrimination and oppression. In addition, because of the
stereotypes in the media, Asian Americans are
not typically considered “real” Americans. By taking a closer
look at these stereotypes, John Palmer hopes
to show how these stereotypes not only cause anguish within the
Asian American community, but also
lead to increased hate crimes against Asian Americans and the
belief that Asian Americans are
second-class citizens. Through an in-depth look into the
stereotypical portrayals of Asians and Asian
Americans in the American mainstream media, Dr. Palmer will
inform the audience that no stereotype is a
“good” stereotype.

Thanks to everyone that came out, or tried to! ~~traffic was horrible
that day!
**OUR NEXT EVENT is scheduled for Sunday, March 9th. We are planning
to meet at Super H Mart (a gigantic Korean grocery store) in Niles,
IL around 2:00pm. We will meet in the food court area there, and shop
around in the afternoon. Then, we will go for dinner at a local
Korean Buffet Restaurant very close to Super H Mart.
I will be making an event and flyers for this so PLEASE HELP SPREAD
THE WORD!
We are hoping that all of you MIDWEST KAD’s will come in for that
day/weekend. Also, if you want to come the saturday night before we
can make a weekend of it!

Hello, everyone–
Mark Hagland here from Chicago. I just wanted to wish everyone Happy
Holidays and a Wonderful 2008! And…
I’ve been meaning to post this for several weeks now, but please find
below information regarding a motherland tour of South Korea
scheduled for next summer that has been designed by adult adoptees
for adult adoptees. All the information is below, but you can also
contact me privately by e-mail, at mhagland@aol.com. This tour will
take place immediately following the conclusion of KAAN 2008 in
Chicago. It is completely separate from the KAAN conference; but of
course, if you’re interested in attending KAAN as well, that would be
great. More information about KAAN specifically can be found at
www.kaanconference.com.
I hope you’ll all consider taking a look at this information, and
might consider joining us for this tour. It promises to be a terrific
experience for all involved!
Best to everyone!

Melody of Life Adoptee Korea Tour
Planned by Adult Adoptees for Adult Adoptees
July 20 to July 30 2008
$3000 from Chicago including airfare and KAAN Conference registration
and hotel
(Dates subject to movement forward a day or two depending on best
airfare.)
The goal in planning this tour, primarily for the benefit of adult
adoptees wishing to visit Korea, is to meet the individual needs of
adoptees as much as possible at a low cost. Therefore, the agenda will
be open as much as possible and the amount charged will be “at cost”.
Friends of Korea and KAAN are all volunteer organizations and no
amount of the tour cost is allocated to overhead. The amount charged
for the tour is subject to change, but will be less than $3,000 for
hotel, airfare and food. If the price negotiated for airfare for our
group is lower than anticipated, participants will be refunded the
difference. This cost includes free registration and hotel
accommodations for the KAAN conference in Chicago occurring just
prior to the tour. The tour will leave from and return to Chicago.
Travel to and from Chicago will be each individual’s responsibility.
A deposit in the amount of $1,500 is due at the time of registration
and the balance due May 15, 2008. Due to the generosity of the
Perfect 5th Ensemble’s Melody of Life Benefit Concert, we are able to
provide matching grants up to 50% of the total cost of the tour based
on financial need. These grants are intended for people for whom this
is their first opportunity to return to Korea and lack the resources
to raise funds for the trip. If you are interested, please contact us
with questions at:

My hagwon is desperately looking for a native English or bilingual (Korean/English) teacher. The school is located in Bucheon, Sangdong district, a pretty happening area. Hi Eun Mi,
This teenbook for EMK Press is heading towards completion. And there’s a gap round an article we have by John Raible. John is speaking about adopted teens and their sibs… but he wants us to find (white, most likely) non-adopted sibs of adoptees who’d be prepared to talk briefly about their family. Questions such as how they were told by their parents about the adoption, how they prepared for it, how it changed the family – and how the relationship with their adopted sib developed. Is it still a good one in adulthood?
I’m trying to find a few adult sibs who would be willing to write a page or two. Can you steer me?
Thanks!

Beginner Korean Language Class – Washington State
There is a new beginner’s Korean language class starting up on
Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 am, geared for Korean adoptive
children and
their families. The class will be ongoing and is mainly for the
kids, but parents are more than welcome to attend and learn also!
Contact Cheri
Peach (kzoopeach@yahoo.com) or myself (hanbok@verizon.net) if
you want more details, or you could contact Mrs. Cheh directly at the
center
425-745-9977, or by cell 206-851-2992 or e-mail
(jiyeoncheh@hotmail.com). I believe the cost is $50.00 for 3 months
of lessons each week
on Saturday mornings. www.morningstarkcc.org
Directly following the language class is the young girls dance
class from 11 to 12:30 if you have been thinking of getting your girl
age 5 and up
involved. There is also a dance class on Tuesday afternoon from
4 to 5:30 at the center. Marie’s involvement with Morning Star has
(I feel) really
helped with her knowledge about and pride in being Korean
American. She has made many friends with Korean American children
there and
enjoys performing as well.
There is also a possibility of a beginners drum class to be held
on the eastside – Mrs. Cheh would be willing to start a new class if
we had 5
students commit. She indicated that Wednesday afternoons work
best for her schedule, and they would be willing to drive as far as
Bellevue to
accommodate those on the east side who don’t want to drive to
Lynnwood. This is a very gracious offer, please let me know your
interest.
