At this point I’m sure many of you have heard about the recent scandal with the Dutch diplomat’s family. While stationed in South Korea, they adopted a child. Upon moving to Hong Kong, they relinquished the child claiming that the child had caused severe trauma to their family. They did not file Dutch citizenship papers for the child and so it has been turned over to Hong Kong social welfare.
The child, Jade, does not speak Korean, but speaks English and Cantonese which is a result of living in the Netherlands for close to 7 years. She is still a Korean citizen, and that puts her citizenship status in jeopardy.
For more information on the case I’ve posted in a few links about the case including GOAL’s official statement on the case.
